Colman Domingo

Colman Domingo is an American actor, playwright, director and producer whose career has been shaped by sustained work on stage, television and film before his late-career emergence as a widely recognized screen leading man. Born Colman Jason Domingo in Philadelphia in 1969, he studied at Temple University and later built his career through theatre, particularly in San Francisco and New York. His professional path is notable for its breadth: he has written plays, directed, performed in musicals and dramas, and moved into increasingly prominent film and television roles without abandoning his stage roots.

Domingo first gained major theatre attention through productions including Passing Strange and The Scottsboro Boys. His work in The Scottsboro Boys brought a Tony Award nomination, and his writing for the stage includes the autobiographical solo play A Boy and His Soul as well as later dramatic work. Long before becoming a regular presence in awards-season film coverage, he was respected in American theatre as a versatile performer and creator with a strong command of language, music and ensemble acting.

On screen, Domingo's visibility grew through a wide range of supporting roles. He appeared in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, Lee Daniels' The Butler, Selma, If Beale Street Could Talk, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Candyman, often bringing gravity and sharp intelligence to relatively concentrated parts. Television broadened his audience further, particularly his role as Victor Strand in Fear the Walking Dead and his Emmy-winning guest performance as Ali in Euphoria. That Euphoria role, centered on a sponsor and recovering addict who becomes a moral anchor for the protagonist, demonstrated his ability to make quiet counsel and vulnerability dramatically compelling.
