Conan O'Brien is an American comedian, television host, writer, producer, actor, and podcaster whose career helped shape modern late-night comedy across network television, cable, streaming, and audio. Born Conan Christopher O'Brien on April 18, 1963, in Brookline, Massachusetts, he grew up in an Irish Catholic family and went on to study history and literature at Harvard University. At Harvard he became president of The Harvard Lampoon, a formative experience that placed him in a long tradition of American comedy writers before he moved into professional television.
O'Brien first built his reputation behind the camera. After early work on comedy programs, he joined Saturday Night Live as a writer in 1988 and contributed during a period that included several major cast members and recurring sketches. He later moved to The Simpsons, where he worked as a writer and producer in the early 1990s. His Simpsons years became part of his comedy legend because they linked him to one of television's most influential writers' rooms just before he unexpectedly became a performer known to a national audience.
In 1993 NBC chose O'Brien to succeed David Letterman as host of Late Night. The decision was risky: he was not a famous stand-up comic or established on-air personality, and the early reviews were rough. Over time, however, Late Night with Conan O'Brien developed a loyal following by leaning into absurd sketches, self-deprecation, remote pieces, eccentric side characters, and O'Brien's willingness to look ridiculous on camera. The show made a virtue of awkwardness and became a training ground for a generation of comedy writers and performers. O'Brien hosted Late Night until 2009, making his tenure one of the defining runs in the franchise's history.

O'Brien briefly hosted The Tonight Show in 2009 and 2010. His exit after a public scheduling dispute with NBC became one of the most discussed moments in late-night television, but he turned the setback into new work rather than retreating. He mounted a live comedy tour, appeared in the documentary Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, and moved to TBS, where Conan ran from 2010 to 2021. The TBS years allowed him to expand long-form remote travel segments and digital comedy while maintaining the loose, improvisational energy that had become his signature.
After ending his nightly cable show, O'Brien continued to evolve as a media figure. His podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, launched in 2018, became a major success by translating his comic neediness, quick wit, and conversational looseness into audio. He also returned to travel comedy with Conan O'Brien Must Go, a series built around visiting fans and leaning into cultural misunderstandings without losing the playful curiosity that defined his best remotes. In 2025 he received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, a major recognition of his influence on American comedy.
O'Brien's career is notable for continuity and reinvention. He began as a writer, survived a difficult transition into hosting, endured a public professional crisis, and then built new platforms in cable, podcasting, live performance, and streaming. His public persona is tall, frantic, literate, silly, and deeply self-mocking, but the durability of his work rests on disciplined writing instincts and a distinctive belief that comedy can be both carefully constructed and gleefully strange.
