Biography

Craig Robinson is an American actor, comedian and musician whose career joins stand-up, television ensemble comedy, film supporting roles and voice acting. Born Craig Phillip Robinson on 25 October 1971 in Chicago, Illinois, he was raised on the city's South Side in a family with strong professional and musical influences: his mother was a music teacher and his father was an attorney. Robinson studied music at Illinois State University, earning a bachelor's degree, and later completed a Master of Education at Saint Xavier University. Before becoming widely known as a performer, he worked as a music teacher in Chicago and Northwest Indiana schools, a background that later fed into his stage persona as a comic who could sing, play keyboards and improvise musically.

Robinson began developing his comedy career while still close to music and teaching. He studied and performed in Chicago's comedy scene, including work associated with The Second City, and appeared on Def Comedy Jam before building screen credits in the early 2000s. Guest roles in shows such as Friends, The Bernie Mac Show, LAX and Arrested Development helped introduce him to television casting, while film appearances in Knocked Up, Pineapple Express and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story made him part of a generation of comedy performers moving between television, Judd Apatow-adjacent films and ensemble improvisational comedy.

His defining television role was Darryl Philbin on the American version of The Office. Robinson first appeared in the first season and became a regular presence as Darryl moved from warehouse supervisor to a more central office figure. The role used Robinson's dry timing, musicality and ability to underplay absurd situations, making Darryl a grounded counterweight to the show's more frantic characters. His work on The Office led to wider recognition and several ensemble award nominations with the cast.
