Biography

Renate Reinsve is a Norwegian actress who moved from national theatre and Scandinavian screen work to international recognition through her collaboration with filmmaker Joachim Trier. Born on 24 November 1987 in Solbergelva, near Drammen, Norway, she trained at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and began her professional career in theatre. Her early stage work included time at Trøndelag Teater in Trondheim, and she later became associated with Det Norske Teatret in Oslo. That theatre background is important to her screen identity: her performances often feel observant, naturalistic, and emotionally precise rather than overtly theatrical.

Reinsve made her feature-film debut in Trier's Oslo, August 31st in 2011. The part was small, but it began an artistic connection that later transformed her career. During the 2010s she continued to work in Norwegian film, television, and theatre, building credits in projects such as The Orheim Company, Welcome to Norway, Nesten voksen, Hvite gutter, and stage productions in Oslo. In 2014 she received the Hedda Award, a major Norwegian theatre honor, for her work in Besøk av gammel dame, an adaptation of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's The Visit.

Her international breakthrough came with Trier's The Worst Person in the World, released in 2021. Reinsve played Julie, a young woman in Oslo moving through relationships, work, self-doubt, and shifting ideas of adulthood. The film became one of the most widely discussed European releases of its year, and Reinsve's performance was central to its reception. She won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress, a major distinction that brought her to the attention of audiences and filmmakers far beyond Norway. She also received a BAFTA nomination for leading actress, confirming that the role had crossed from festival discovery into broader awards recognition.
