Mark Duplass

Mark Duplass is an American actor, writer, director, producer, and musician whose career helped define a strand of low-budget American independent film before expanding into television, streaming, and studio projects. Born Mark David Duplass in New Orleans on December 7, 1976, he grew up in Louisiana and studied at the University of Texas at Austin and the City College of New York. His creative partnership with his brother Jay Duplass became the foundation of Duplass Brothers Productions, a company associated with intimate, actor-driven stories, economical production methods, and a willingness to move between comedy, drama, horror, and documentary.

The Duplass brothers first attracted major attention in the 2000s with short films and features connected to the movement often labeled mumblecore, though their work soon proved broader than that label. The Puffy Chair, released in 2005, became a key early feature for the brothers and demonstrated their interest in awkward relationships, improvisational energy, and small emotional shifts. They followed with films including Baghead, Cyrus, Jeff, Who Lives at Home, and The Do-Deca-Pentathlon. Their style often emphasized naturalistic dialogue, limited locations, and close collaboration with performers, which made their productions influential for other independent filmmakers trying to work outside large studio systems.

As an actor, Duplass built a parallel career in both comedy and drama. He played Pete Eckhart on the FX/FXX fantasy-football comedy The League and appeared in films such as Humpday, Greenberg, Safety Not Guaranteed, The One I Love, The Lazarus Effect, Blue Jay, Tully, Paddleton, and Language Lessons. His screen persona often uses discomfort, sincerity, and self-awareness: he can play men who are funny, vulnerable, manipulative, grieving, or quietly strange. That flexibility became especially visible in Creep and Creep 2, found-footage horror films he co-wrote and starred in with Patrick Brice. In those films, Duplass turned his approachable manner into something deeply unsettling, creating one of his most distinctive acting showcases.
