Aaron Eckhart

Aaron Eckhart is an American actor whose career has moved between independent drama, studio thrillers, romantic comedy, and large-scale action films. Born Aaron Edward Eckhart on March 12, 1968, in Cupertino, California, he spent part of his youth outside the United States, including years in the United Kingdom and Australia. He studied film at Brigham Young University, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1994, and also trained as an actor before building a professional career in theater, television, and film.

Eckhart's early career was strongly shaped by his collaboration with writer-director Neil LaBute. The two met while Eckhart was at Brigham Young University, and LaBute later cast him in stage work and then in the feature film In the Company of Men. Released in 1997, the film gave Eckhart a striking breakthrough role as Chad, an office worker whose calculated cruelty drives the story. The performance brought him major critical attention and an Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance, establishing him as an actor able to play charm and menace at the same time.

After additional LaBute projects, Eckhart reached a broader audience with Steven Soderbergh's Erin Brockovich in 2000, playing George, the biker boyfriend of Julia Roberts's title character. The film's success introduced him to mainstream viewers while preserving the grounded quality that had marked his independent work. In 2005, he starred as lobbyist Nick Naylor in Thank You for Smoking, a satirical comedy adapted from Christopher Buckley's novel. His sharp, comic performance earned a Golden Globe nomination and remains one of his signature leading roles.
