Jason Momoa

Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa is an American actor, producer, writer, and director known for physically imposing screen roles that often combine action, fantasy, and adventure with a strong connection to his Native Hawaiian identity. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on 1 August 1979, and was raised partly in Norwalk, Iowa, before returning to Hawaii as a young adult. His early life between the mainland United States and the islands became an important part of his public identity and later creative choices.

Momoa's first major screen job came with Baywatch: Hawaii, where he played Jason Ioane from 1999 to 2001. He continued building television credits through North Shore and then gained a durable genre following as Ronon Dex on Stargate Atlantis. That role established many of the traits audiences would associate with him: physical intensity, dry humor, and an action style rooted in movement rather than polish.

His international breakthrough came as Khal Drogo in HBO's Game of Thrones. Although the character appeared mainly in the early part of the series, Momoa's performance became one of the show's defining first-season impressions. He then expanded into film and independent production, directing, co-writing, and starring in Road to Paloma, a drama that also reflected his interest in Native and Indigenous stories.

Momoa became a global film star through his portrayal of Arthur Curry, Aquaman, in the DC Extended Universe. After a brief introduction in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, he played the character in Justice League, Aquaman, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. His version of Aquaman reimagined the superhero as a rough-edged, ocean-connected outsider rather than the cleaner-cut figure often associated with earlier comics and animation. The success of Aquaman made him one of the most visible action stars of the late 2010s.
