Hugh Jackman is an Australian actor, singer and producer whose career has bridged superhero cinema, movie musicals, prestige drama and Broadway theatre. Born Hugh Michael Jackman in Sydney on October 12, 1968, he studied communications at the University of Technology Sydney before training formally in performance at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. His early work in Australian television and theatre led quickly to international attention.
Jackman first became known to many Australian viewers through television, including the prison drama Correlli, and through stage musicals such as Beauty and the Beast and Sunset Boulevard. His theatre breakthrough came with the role of Curly McLain in the 1998 London revival of Oklahoma!, which earned him major attention in the West End. That stage background remained central to his identity even after he became a global film star.
His international screen breakthrough came in 2000 when he was cast as Logan, also known as Wolverine, in X-Men. Jackman carried the role across more than two decades, appearing in the original X-Men film series, solo Wolverine films, Logan and the Marvel Cinematic Universe entry Deadpool & Wolverine. The role required action-star physicality, emotional durability and a sense of wounded isolation; it became one of the most durable superhero performances in modern film.
Jackman did not confine himself to franchise work. His film roles include the romantic comedy Kate & Leopold, the action-horror film Van Helsing, Christopher Nolan's The Prestige, Baz Luhrmann's Australia, the science-fiction boxing drama Real Steel, Denis Villeneuve's thriller Prisoners and the school-scandal drama Bad Education. He has also voiced characters in animated films including Flushed Away, Happy Feet, Rise of the Guardians and Missing Link.

Musical performance brought Jackman some of his highest honors. He won the Tony Award for best actor in a musical for playing Peter Allen in The Boy from Oz and later returned to Broadway in The Music Man. On film, he played Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, winning a Golden Globe and receiving an Academy Award nomination. The Greatest Showman further cemented his image as a screen musical performer, with the soundtrack becoming a major commercial success and earning Grammy recognition.
Jackman has also been a prominent awards-show host, including hosting the Tony Awards and the Academy Awards. In 2019 he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for service to the performing arts and to the global community. His career is defined by unusual versatility: few modern actors have sustained comparable success as an action lead, dramatic actor, live musical performer and public entertainer.
