Keanu Charles Reeves (born September 2, 1964) is a Canadian actor and musician whose career has moved from Canadian television and youth comedy to some of the most influential action and science-fiction films of the modern era. He is best known for playing Ted Logan in the Bill & Ted films, Johnny Utah in Point Break, Jack Traven in Speed, Neo in The Matrix series, and John Wick in the John Wick franchise. Reeves has also worked in independent drama, romance, horror, animation, and directing, and his public image has become unusually associated with modesty, resilience, generosity, and a kind of understated melancholy that often complements his screen roles.
Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon, to Patricia Taylor, an English costume designer and performer, and Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr., who was from Hawaii and had Chinese, Hawaiian, English, Irish, and Portuguese ancestry. His childhood was geographically unsettled: after his parents separated, he lived in several places before being raised mainly in Toronto, Canada. He became a Canadian citizen and has long been identified as a Canadian actor, even as his film career became international. Reeves has spoken in interviews about struggling academically and attending several high schools. He was drawn to hockey and performance, and he began acting in theater and Canadian television as a teenager.
His early screen work included Canadian television, commercials, stage roles, and the feature film Youngblood. In the late 1980s, he began appearing more regularly in American productions, including River's Edge, a grim youth drama that showed he could do more than light comedy. His first broadly popular role came with Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure in 1989. As Ted Theodore Logan, Reeves played an amiable, dazed, rock-loving teenager traveling through time with Alex Winter's Bill S. Preston, Esquire. The film's success made Reeves recognizable to a young audience and led to sequels in 1991 and 2020. It also attached him for years to a slacker-comic image that he would spend the next decade complicating.

The early 1990s were crucial to Reeves's range. In Kathryn Bigelow's Point Break, he played FBI agent Johnny Utah opposite Patrick Swayze, entering the action genre through a film that mixed surfing, crime, masculinity, and spiritual longing. That same year, Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho gave him one of his most respected early dramatic roles, as Scott Favor, a privileged young man drifting through street life with River Phoenix's Mike Waters. Reeves also appeared in Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula and Bernardo Bertolucci's Little Buddha, projects that did not all receive equal critical praise for his performances but demonstrated that major directors were willing to place him in ambitious material.
Speed, released in 1994, made Reeves a full-fledged action star. Playing Los Angeles police officer Jack Traven opposite Sandra Bullock, he anchored a tightly constructed thriller about a bus rigged to explode if it slowed below a set speed. Reeves brought physical commitment and a clean, direct heroic presence to the role, while the film's success proved that he could carry a large studio action hit outside the Bill & Ted persona. Rather than simply repeat the formula, he made uneven but adventurous choices in the second half of the decade, including Johnny Mnemonic, A Walk in the Clouds, Chain Reaction, and The Devil's Advocate.
The Matrix, released in 1999, reshaped Reeves's career and became a landmark in science-fiction cinema. As Neo, a computer hacker awakened to the knowledge that reality is a simulated system, Reeves played a character whose blankness, uncertainty, and eventual grace were essential to the film's design. The Wachowskis combined cyberpunk, martial arts, philosophy, religious imagery, and digital visual effects, while Reeves's physical training and controlled performance helped make Neo an iconic screen figure. He returned for The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003, and later for The Matrix Resurrections in 2021, making the role one of the defining parts of his career.
In the 2000s, Reeves continued to move between genres. He played the supernatural detective John Constantine in Constantine, appeared in the romantic drama The Lake House opposite Sandra Bullock, worked in Richard Linklater's animated science-fiction film A Scanner Darkly, and starred in The Day the Earth Stood Still. Some projects were more warmly received than others, but Reeves retained an audience partly because his performances often carried sincerity even in stylized or high-concept material. He also kept ties to music, playing bass in the alternative rock band Dogstar, which was active in the 1990s and later reunited.
Reeves made his feature directing debut with Man of Tai Chi in 2013, a martial-arts film starring Tiger Chen. The project reflected his long interest in fight choreography and the physical discipline behind screen action. A year later, John Wick began an unexpected second action peak. Directed by Chad Stahelski, who had a stunt background and had doubled Reeves on The Matrix, John Wick cast him as a grieving retired assassin pulled back into a criminal underworld after a personal loss. The film's clean choreography, world-building, and deadpan emotional economy turned a modest revenge premise into a franchise. Reeves's commitment to training, firearms handling, and close-quarters action became central to the series' appeal.
The John Wick sequels expanded the mythology and kept Reeves in the center of contemporary action cinema well into his fifties. The role used several qualities associated with him: stillness, sadness, politeness, sudden movement, and a sense that the character is carrying more pain than he says. Reeves also returned to comedy and family-friendly work, including voice roles and a memorable self-parodying appearance in Always Be My Maybe. The belated Bill & Ted Face the Music let him revisit Ted Logan not as a teenager but as a middle-aged dreamer still trying to fulfill an old destiny.
Reeves's off-screen reputation has become part of his cultural presence, though it should not overshadow the work itself. He has been widely described by collaborators and journalists as courteous and private, and he has supported charitable causes while often avoiding publicity around donations. His personal life has also included public tragedy, including the stillbirth of his daughter with Jennifer Syme and Syme's death in a car accident in 2001. Reeves has generally kept such matters private, and responsible accounts of his life avoid turning them into myth. What is clear is that his screen career has endured through reinvention: teen comic, romantic lead, action star, cyberpunk icon, and minimalist avenger. Few actors have been so strongly identified with multiple beloved franchises while still maintaining an aura of personal reserve.
