Sandra Hüller

Hüller reached a new level of worldwide recognition in 2023 with two major Cannes titles released in the same year. In Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, she played Sandra Voyter, a writer accused of killing her husband in a courtroom drama built around ambiguity, language, marriage, and perception. Her performance won the European Film Award and César Award for Best Actress and brought nominations for the Academy Award and BAFTA Award. In Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, she played Hedwig Höss, wife of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss, in a film that uses domestic detail and emotional blankness to examine ordinary life beside atrocity. The contrast between those two roles made 2023 a defining year in her international career.

Hüller’s later work has included Sisi & I, Munich: The Edge of War, Proxima, Sibyl, and forthcoming international projects such as Project Hail Mary. She has also remained active on stage, including work with Schauspiel Bochum and director Johan Simons. Her reputation rests on an ability to withhold easy answers: she often plays characters whose motives are legible enough to be human but opaque enough to remain unsettling. In both theatre and film, Hüller has become associated with rigor, intelligence, and performances that invite close attention rather than easy consumption.
