Dave Bautista

Bautista began acting while still known primarily as a wrestler, but his film identity changed with Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. As Drax, he turned an imposing physical role into a comic and emotional one, using literal-minded deadpan delivery rather than simply relying on action scenes. He returned as Drax across Marvel projects through Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, becoming familiar to global audiences far beyond wrestling fandom.

What distinguishes Bautista's acting career is his pursuit of varied filmmakers and tones. He appeared as Mr. Hinx in the James Bond film Spectre, Sapper Morton in Blade Runner 2049, Glossu Rabban in Dune and Dune: Part Two, Duke Cody in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Leonard in M. Night Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin, Scott Ward in Army of the Dead, and Eddie in The Last Showgirl. Some roles are brief, but he has used them to work with directors such as Denis Villeneuve, Rian Johnson, Sam Mendes, Zack Snyder, and Shyamalan. His performances often play against the obvious reading of his physique, showing sadness, uncertainty, or gentleness under intimidation.

He has also had a short mixed martial arts record, winning his lone professional bout in 2012, and has trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Still, his post-wrestling reputation rests most strongly on acting choices. Bautista has repeatedly said he wants to be considered an actor rather than a movie star, and his career reflects that distinction. He is one of the rare performers to turn a championship wrestling career into a serious screen résumé without simply repeating the same persona.
