Taika Waititi is a New Zealand filmmaker, writer, actor, producer, and comedian whose work blends deadpan humor, emotional directness, genre play, and an interest in outsiders. Born Taika David Cohen in Wellington on August 16, 1975, he is of Māori and Jewish heritage and has often used comedy to approach grief, family, colonial history, and awkward human behavior. He studied at Victoria University of Wellington and began as part of New Zealand's comedy and performance scene before moving into short films, features, television, and major studio filmmaking.
Waititi's international breakthrough began with short-form work. His short film Two Cars, One Night earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Live Action Short Film, establishing his gift for finding warmth and absurdity in small, specifically New Zealand settings. He made his feature debut with Eagle vs Shark, then reached a broader local audience with Boy, a coming-of-age film about fantasy, poverty, and disappointment filtered through a child's imagination. Boy became a major New Zealand box-office success and helped define the mix of tenderness and comic deflation that would become central to his style.
His collaboration with Jemaine Clement on What We Do in the Shadows extended that style into mockumentary horror comedy. The film's portrait of socially inept Wellington vampires became a cult favorite and later inspired an American television adaptation, with Waititi involved as producer and director. He followed with Hunt for the Wilderpeople, adapting Barry Crump's writing into an adventure comedy about a foster child and a reluctant guardian on the run in the bush. The film became another major New Zealand success and showed that Waititi could combine broad comedy with genuine melancholy without flattening either.

Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok brought Waititi into blockbuster filmmaking. He reshaped the Thor series with a brighter comic tone, improvised character rhythms, and a more relaxed treatment of superhero mythology, while also performing the motion-capture role of Korg. He later directed Thor: Love and Thunder. Between those films, he wrote, directed, produced, and acted in Jojo Rabbit, a World War II satire adapted from Christine Leunens's novel Caging Skies. The film was divisive in concept but widely recognized by awards bodies, and Waititi won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, becoming the first Māori filmmaker to win a competitive Oscar.
Waititi has also become a substantial television figure. He directed an episode of The Mandalorian and voiced IG-11, co-created Reservation Dogs with Sterlin Harjo, and starred as Blackbeard in Our Flag Means Death. His later work has included Next Goal Wins, acting roles in Free Guy and Lightyear, and continued producing and writing across film and television. Across formats, his signature remains a refusal to treat comedy and pain as opposites; he often finds jokes inside loneliness and sincerity inside the ridiculous.
