Stan Lee

Stan Lee was an American comic-book writer, editor, publisher and producer who became the best-known public face of Marvel Comics. Born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York City in 1922, he entered comics as a teenager at Timely Comics, the company that later evolved into Marvel. After service in the United States Army during the Second World War, he returned to publishing and spent decades in editorial roles, eventually becoming Marvel's central creative and promotional leader during a period that transformed American superhero comics.

Lee's lasting importance comes from the Marvel characters and style he helped build in the 1960s, usually in collaboration with artists and co-plotters. With Jack Kirby he co-created or helped launch the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Thor, the X-Men and many other characters; with Steve Ditko he co-created Spider-Man and Doctor Strange; and with collaborators including Don Heck, Bill Everett and others he contributed to the development of Iron Man, Daredevil, Black Widow, Ant-Man, the Wasp and related Marvel properties. The exact division of creative labor on these works has long been discussed by comics historians, but Lee's role as editor, scripter, packager and tireless promoter was central to Marvel's house style.

That style changed superhero storytelling. Marvel heroes argued, worried about money, made mistakes and lived in recognizable cities. Lee's captions and letters pages spoke directly to readers, building a sense of community around Marvel books. He popularized phrases such as “Excelsior!” and presented the company as a lively creative bullpen, turning editorial voice into part of the entertainment. By the 1970s he had become publisher, then moved increasingly into ambassadorial and media work as Marvel characters expanded beyond print.
