Pierre Coffin is a French animator, director, writer, producer, and voice actor best known as one of the central creative figures behind Illumination's Despicable Me and Minions films. Born Pierre-Louis Padang Coffin on March 16, 1967, he is the son of French diplomat Yves Coffin and Indonesian novelist Nh. Dini. His childhood included time in several countries, and he later studied cinema and animation in France, including at the Gobelins animation school in Paris, one of Europe's most respected animation programs.
Coffin began his professional career in animation before moving into directing. His early credits included work connected to Amblin's We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story and later French animation and commercial projects. He made the short film Pings in the late 1990s and developed the animated characters Pat and Stan, building experience in character comedy, timing, and physical performance before entering the feature-film world that would make him internationally known.
His major breakthrough came with Despicable Me, released in 2010 and co-directed with Chris Renaud. The film introduced Gru, his adopted daughters, and the small yellow Minions, whose elastic slapstick and invented language became a global pop-culture phenomenon. Coffin not only directed key installments but also supplied the Minions' voices, mixing gibberish, bits of multiple languages, musical rhythm, and comic panic into performances that were intentionally universal rather than tied to one national market. Despicable Me 2 earned an Academy Award nomination for animated feature, and the success of Minions confirmed the characters as a franchise of their own.

Coffin's best-known directing credits include Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2, Minions, and Despicable Me 3, while his voice work has remained a constant through later entries such as Minions: The Rise of Gru and Despicable Me 4. His contribution to the franchise is unusual because it combines behind-the-camera authorship with a heavily performed vocal identity: the Minions are animated characters, but much of their personality depends on Coffin's vocal choices and comic instincts.
Although the franchise became a merchandising giant, Coffin's role is rooted in traditional animation craft: silhouette, rhythm, expression, and easily readable emotion. The Minions work internationally because they behave like silent-film comedians with a noisy, musical language attached. Coffin's career is therefore tied not just to box-office success but to one of the most recognizable character-voice creations in modern animation.
