Christoph Waltz

Christoph Waltz is an Austrian-German actor whose international career is defined by a rare combination of theatrical training, multilingual precision, and screen roles that often turn charm into menace. Born in Vienna on 4 October 1956, he grew up in a family closely tied to the performing arts: his father worked as a set designer and his mother as a costume designer, while earlier generations of his family had roots in theatre and film. Waltz studied acting at Vienna’s Max Reinhardt Seminar, also trained in music and opera, and later spent time in New York studying with major acting teachers including Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler. That mixture of European stage discipline and close textual analysis became a hallmark of his work.

Before becoming widely known to English-language audiences, Waltz built a long career in German-language theatre and television. He appeared on stages in Zurich, Vienna, Salzburg, Cologne, and Hamburg, and worked steadily in television from the late 1970s onward. His pre-Hollywood career included crime dramas, historical productions, television movies, and voice and narration work, giving him a broad technical base long before he became a familiar name in international cinema. He also directed for German television, including the 2000 film Wenn man sich traut.

Waltz’s global breakthrough came in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, released in 2009. As SS officer Hans Landa, he delivered a performance built on language, politeness, cruelty, and sudden shifts of tone. The role won him the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor, followed by the Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for supporting actor. Tarantino later reunited with Waltz for Django Unchained, in which Waltz played Dr. King Schultz, a German bounty hunter whose refinement masks both danger and moral conviction. That performance brought Waltz a second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, along with another BAFTA and Golden Globe.
