Jeff Bridges

His most iconic popular role arrived in Joel and Ethan Coen's The Big Lebowski. As Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, Bridges created a comic character whose laid-back speech, bathrobe silhouette and refusal to fit conventional heroic molds became a lasting part of American film culture. The performance was not initially a blockbuster phenomenon, but it became one of the most quoted and beloved screen characters of the 1990s. Bridges later worked with the Coens again in True Grit, playing Rooster Cogburn with a rougher, more weathered quality.

Bridges won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Crazy Heart, in which he played Bad Blake, an aging country singer whose talent and self-destructive habits have left him professionally diminished. The film drew on Bridges' own musical interests, and he later released albums and toured as a musician. He received further major acclaim for Hell or High Water, playing Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton, and for films including The Contender, Iron Man and The Giver. On television, he led the FX series The Old Man, bringing his late-career gravitas to a spy thriller role.

Beyond acting, Bridges is known for on-set photography, environmental advocacy and public work against childhood hunger. His screen image often suggests ease, but the body of work is rigorous: he has remained credible in art films, blockbusters, westerns, comedies and character dramas for more than five decades. Few American actors have balanced movie-star warmth with such a long record of detailed, idiosyncratic performances.
