Akira Ishida is a Japanese actor and voice actor known for a long career in anime, games, drama CDs and animated films. Born on 2 November 1967 in Nisshin, Aichi, Japan, he became one of the most recognizable male voices in Japanese popular media from the 1990s onward. His public profiles list him as a graduate of Nihon University and as represented by Peerless Gerbera. Although he has appeared in live-action contexts, his reputation rests chiefly on voice acting, where his performances often emphasize calm intelligence, ambiguity, elegance or concealed emotional volatility.
Ishida's career developed during a period when anime voice actors became increasingly visible to fans as performers in their own right. He built a wide filmography across television animation, theatrical animation and video games, moving easily between heroic, comic, mysterious and antagonistic roles. His voice is frequently associated with characters who are restrained on the surface but emotionally complex underneath, a quality that helped make him a fixture in ensemble anime casts.
Among his best-known roles is Kaworu Nagisa in Neon Genesis Evangelion, a brief but culturally influential part that became one of the most discussed performances in the franchise. He also voiced Cho Hakkai in Saiyuki, Katsura Kotarou in Gintama, Gaara in Naruto, Athrun Zala in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, Zeref in Fairy Tail, Makoto Yuki in Persona 3, Kuja in Final Fantasy projects, Akaza in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Kamisato Ayato in Genshin Impact and Luocha in Honkai: Star Rail. These roles show the breadth of his career across shōnen action, science fiction, fantasy, comedy and games.

Ishida has also received industry and fan recognition. He was selected as the most popular voice actor in Animage's Anime Grand Prix in 2004, a marker of his popularity during the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED period. In 2007, he won a supporting-actor honor at the first Seiyu Awards. Public profiles also list a later Most Valuable Seiyū Award at the 20th Seiyu Awards. These recognitions reflect both the longevity of his career and his standing among anime audiences.
His film and franchise work includes the Persona 3 theatrical films, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED-related features, Demon Slayer releases and many other productions. In games, his performances have extended his reach beyond traditional television anime audiences, particularly through major role-playing and mobile titles. Because many of his characters recur across sequels, films, games and drama albums, his career is not simply a list of one-off roles but a network of long-running franchise associations.
Ishida's importance in voice acting comes from consistency as much as from individual famous parts. He has remained active for decades while adapting to changes in anime distribution, fan culture and game performance. For viewers and players, his name is often a signal of a particular kind of character: composed, articulate and potentially dangerous, but capable of warmth or humor when the role calls for it. That recognizable vocal identity has made him one of the durable figures in modern Japanese voice acting.
