Biography
Yoshimasa Hosoya is a Japanese voice actor and narrator known for a deep, flexible voice that has made him a frequent choice for athletes, soldiers, complicated rivals and emotionally guarded protagonists in anime, games and dubbing. Born on February 10, 1982, in Onomichi, Hiroshima, Japan, he trained for voice work at Tokyo Announce Gakuin Performing Arts College and through the Mausu Promotion Actor Training Center. He joined Mausu Promotion, later left the agency, and has worked as a freelancer since 2014.
Hosoya's early career included small roles across television animation before he began to receive larger parts in the late 2000s and early 2010s. One of his major breakthrough roles was Shichika Yasuri in Katanagatari, a stylized adaptation that required both comic restraint and gradual emotional awakening. Around the same period, he voiced Kuranosuke Shiraishi in The Prince of Tennis franchise and Junpei Hyūga in Kuroko's Basketball, helping establish him in sports anime. His performance as Sentarō Kawabuchi in Kids on the Slope also showed a warmer, more naturalistic side, fitting a series built around jazz, friendship and adolescent longing.
International anime audiences often know Hosoya for Reiner Braun in Attack on Titan. The role demanded a balance of physical confidence, buried conflict and psychological fracture as the series revealed more about Reiner's identity and loyalties. Hosoya also voiced Asahi Azumane in Haikyu!!, giving the Karasuno wing spiker a gentle, anxious strength; Fumikage Tokoyami in My Hero Academia, whose formal speech and shadow power made him one of Class 1-A's most distinctive students; and Doppo Kunikida in Bungo Stray Dogs, where he brought rigidity, impatience and loyalty to an idealistic detective.
