Idris Elba is an English actor, producer, musician, and DJ whose career spans British television, prestige American drama, major studio franchises, independent film, voice acting, documentary presenting, and music. Born Idrissa Akuna Elba on September 6, 1972, in Hackney, London, he grew up in East London and developed interests in both performance and DJing as a teenager. Before international fame, he trained and worked through British theatre and television while also supporting himself with practical jobs and nightclub work.
Elba's early screen career was built in British television. He appeared in series such as Bramwell, The Bill, Family Affairs, Ultraviolet, and Dangerfield, then moved between the United Kingdom and the United States as opportunities widened. His breakthrough for many American viewers came with HBO's The Wire, where he played Russell "Stringer" Bell from 2002 to 2004. The role made use of Elba's controlled intensity: Stringer was both a drug-world strategist and an aspiring businessman, and Elba's performance became one of the defining elements of a series now widely regarded as a landmark in television drama.
The other signature television role of Elba's career is DCI John Luther in the BBC crime drama Luther. Beginning in 2010, Luther placed him at the center of a psychologically heavy detective series, and the performance brought him a Golden Globe Award as well as repeated Emmy recognition. Elba later returned to the character in Luther: The Fallen Sun, extending the role into feature-film form. His television work has remained varied, including comedy guest appearances on The Office, a nominated guest turn in The Big C, and the Apple TV+ thriller Hijack.

In film, Elba has moved between character drama, action, genre pictures, and franchise work. He appeared in American Gangster, Obsessed, Prometheus, Pacific Rim, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Beasts of No Nation, Molly's Game, The Dark Tower, The Harder They Fall, Beast, and Three Thousand Years of Longing. His portrayal of Nelson Mandela brought major awards attention, while his performance as the Commandant in Beasts of No Nation won a Screen Actors Guild Award and strengthened his reputation for morally complex dramatic roles. He also became familiar to blockbuster audiences as Heimdall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad.
Elba has had a parallel career in voice and family entertainment. He voiced Chief Bogo in Zootopia, Shere Khan in Disney's live-action-styled The Jungle Book, Fluke in Finding Dory, and Knuckles in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series. Away from acting, he works as a DJ under names including DJ Big Driis and Idris, records and produces music, and has presented documentary and social-issue programming. His directing credits include the 2018 feature Yardie. He was appointed OBE and later knighted, reflecting both his screen achievements and public cultural profile.
Elba's appeal comes from unusual range: he can play contained authority, bruised vulnerability, comic self-possession, action physicality, and vocal character work without seeming confined to one lane. By the mid-2020s he had become one of the most internationally visible British actors of his generation, with a career that connects serious television drama, global franchise filmmaking, and music culture.
