At the same time, Leto developed a second career in music. Thirty Seconds to Mars, formed with his brother Shannon Leto, became a successful alternative rock band with albums including 30 Seconds to Mars, A Beautiful Lie, This Is War, Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams and later releases. Leto's work with the band complicates his celebrity because he has never been only an actor who occasionally sings; music has occupied large stretches of his career and shaped his public persona as a touring frontman, video director and visual stylist.

After a period in which music seemed to take priority, Leto returned to screen prominence with Dallas Buyers Club. Playing Rayon, a transgender woman living with HIV, he won the Academy Award, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for supporting actor. The performance was widely recognized as a comeback and as the major awards peak of his acting career. It also reinforced the association between Leto and transformative performance, since he lost significant weight and approached the role through a visibly altered physical presentation.

Leto's later career has included both prestigious ensemble work and controversial franchise turns. In Suicide Squad he played the Joker, entering one of comic-book cinema's most famous roles with a stylized and divisive interpretation. In Blade Runner 2049 he played Niander Wallace, a blind industrialist whose calm menace fit the film's severe visual world. He later starred as Michael Morbius in Morbius, appeared in House of Gucci as Paolo Gucci under heavy prosthetic makeup, played Albert Sparma in The Little Things and portrayed Adam Neumann in the limited series WeCrashed.

His filmography also includes Fight Club, American Psycho, Panic Room, Lord of War and The Outsider, making him a performer who has moved between cult cinema, thrillers, comic-book films and biographical drama. He has often been most effective when directors use his presence as something unstable: charismatic but unsettling, beautiful but damaged, or outwardly controlled while morally or psychologically extreme.

Leto's public reputation is unusually polarized. Admirers point to his discipline, visual imagination and willingness to take risks. Critics often find his choices excessive or self-conscious, particularly when stories about his preparation become part of the publicity around a role. That tension is part of why he remains a distinctive figure. Few contemporary performers have combined Oscar-winning drama, superhero villainy, art-house science fiction and arena-rock performance so visibly.

Across more than three decades, Leto has built a career around transformation and image-making. Whether playing a doomed addict, a damaged musician, a corporate visionary, a comic-book antagonist or a rock frontman, he tends to treat performance as total design: body, costume, voice, posture, music and publicity all become part of the same constructed figure. That can make his work uneven, but it also makes it hard to mistake for anyone else's.
