Ian McShane

His most celebrated dramatic role came as Al Swearengen in HBO's Deadwood. David Milch's western gave McShane language of unusual density and profanity, and he turned Swearengen into one of modern television's great antiheroes: brutal, strategic, funny, sentimental when least expected, and inseparable from the birth of a community built on greed and compromise. McShane won the Golden Globe Award for best actor in a television drama and received Emmy and Screen Actors Guild recognition for the role. He returned to the part in Deadwood: The Movie, where the character's age and mortality deepened the performance's sense of history.

McShane's later career has been remarkably active in genre storytelling. He voiced Tai Lung in Kung Fu Panda and returned to the role in later franchise work. He played Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and became Winston Scott, the Continental Hotel's urbane and calculating manager, in the John Wick franchise. On television he played Mr. Wednesday in American Gods, a role that made direct use of his mythic authority and trickster energy, and he appeared in Game of Thrones, Ray Donovan, and other high-profile series.

His appeal comes from voice, timing, and controlled theatricality. McShane can make a line sound like a threat, a joke, a seduction, and a legal ruling all at once. That quality has allowed him to age into roles of command without losing unpredictability. Few actors have moved so smoothly from British matinee-idol beginnings to cult television immortality and franchise elder-statesman status.
