John Krasinski is an American actor, filmmaker, producer, and screenwriter best known for playing Jim Halpert on the NBC sitcom The Office and for creating and starring in the A Quiet Place film series. Born John Burke Krasinski on 20 October 1979 in Newton, Massachusetts, he grew up in the Boston area and attended Newton South High School. He later studied at Brown University, where he focused on English and playwriting and was active in sketch comedy and theater before moving to New York to pursue acting.
Krasinski's early professional work included commercials, stage readings, and small television and film appearances. His breakthrough came when he was cast as Jim Halpert in The Office, the American adaptation of the British workplace comedy. From 2005 to 2013, Jim became one of the show's central characters, known for his understated humor, camera looks, and long-running romance with Pam Beesly. Krasinski appeared throughout the series, and he also worked behind the camera as a producer and occasional director, including directing episodes during the show's later seasons.
While The Office made him widely recognizable, Krasinski built a parallel film career during and after the series. He appeared in supporting and leading roles in License to Wed, Leatherheads, Away We Go, It's Complicated, Something Borrowed, Promised Land, and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. He also performed voice work in animated projects such as Monsters University. His early directing work included the comedy-drama Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, adapted from David Foster Wallace's short-story collection, and the family drama The Hollars.

Krasinski's career changed significantly with A Quiet Place, the 2018 horror thriller he directed, co-wrote, and starred in opposite Emily Blunt. The film's largely silent premise, focused on a family surviving in a world threatened by sound-sensitive creatures, became both a commercial and critical success. Krasinski followed it with A Quiet Place Part II, which expanded the story and further established him as a mainstream filmmaker. The success of the franchise led to wider recognition of his directing and screenwriting work, and Time named him to its Time 100 list in 2018.
From 2018 to 2023, Krasinski starred as the title character in Amazon's Jack Ryan, a television adaptation based on Tom Clancy's analyst-turned-operative. The role marked a shift toward action and thriller material and also involved him as an executive producer. He later directed and starred in IF, a 2024 family fantasy film about imaginary friends, further extending his work as a writer-director beyond horror and television comedy.
Krasinski co-founded Sunday Night Productions and has developed work across scripted television, film, and unscripted entertainment. He co-created the television format Lip Sync Battle, which received multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations in the structured reality category. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he created and hosted Some Good News, a web series focused on uplifting stories and remote celebrity appearances.
Krasinski married British actor Emily Blunt in 2010; they have two children. Across his career, he has moved from sitcom ensemble acting into directing, producing, screenwriting, and action and genre filmmaking, while remaining closely associated with the character of Jim Halpert and the cultural legacy of The Office.
