Biography

Tom Holland is an English actor best known for playing Peter Parker and Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Born Thomas Stanley Holland on June 1, 1996, in Kingston upon Thames, London, he trained first as a dancer and stage performer before moving into film and becoming one of the most commercially successful actors of his generation.

Holland was raised in a creative family: his father, Dominic Holland, is a comedian and author, and his mother, Nicola Frost, is a photographer. He was educated at Donhead Preparatory School, Wimbledon College, and the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology. As a child, Holland took hip-hop dance classes, and his performance at a dance festival led choreographer Lynne Page to arrange an audition for Billy Elliot the Musical. After extensive training in ballet, tap, and acrobatics, he joined the West End production at London's Victoria Palace Theatre.

Holland made his stage debut in Billy Elliot the Musical in 2008 as Michael Caffrey, Billy's friend, and later took over the title role. He remained with the production until 2010. The role required demanding dance and gymnastic work and gave him early professional experience in a major London stage production. After leaving the musical, he voiced a role in the British version of the animated film Arrietty and began auditioning for screen work.

His film breakthrough came in J. A. Bayona's disaster drama The Impossible in 2012. Holland played Lucas, a teenager separated from members of his family after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The performance drew strong critical attention and brought him several breakthrough and young-performer awards, as well as a Goya Award nomination. He followed the role with appearances in How I Live Now, Locke, In the Heart of the Sea, and the television miniseries Wolf Hall.
