Biography

Jason Bateman is an American actor, director, and producer whose career spans child stardom, television comedy, feature-film comedy, and acclaimed streaming drama. Born Jason Kent Bateman in Rye, New York, on January 14, 1969, he grew up in an entertainment family: his father, Kent Bateman, worked as an actor, writer, and director, and his older sister Justine Bateman also became a well-known television performer.

Bateman began acting as a child in the early 1980s. He appeared on Little House on the Prairie and then became familiar to young television viewers through Silver Spoons and The Hogan Family. By his late teens he had also begun directing television episodes, a step that foreshadowed the behind-the-camera work that would become increasingly important later in his career. His early film credits included Teen Wolf Too and Necessary Roughness, but, like many former child actors, he spent part of the 1990s moving among short-lived series, guest roles, and television movies while looking for an adult screen identity.

That second phase arrived with Arrested Development, the Fox sitcom that premiered in 2003. Bateman played Michael Bluth, the comparatively responsible son trying to hold together a deeply dysfunctional wealthy family. His dry timing and straight-man control gave the show's more eccentric characters room to spin out, and the role won him a Golden Globe while making him central to one of the most influential American sitcoms of the 2000s. The series' later Netflix revival kept the part connected to his public image for years.
