Patrick Warburton is an American actor and comedian instantly recognizable for his deep voice, square-jawed presence, and deadpan comic delivery. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, he built a career that spans live-action sitcoms, cult superhero comedy, studio animation, adult animation, children’s films, and narration. His screen persona is unusually specific: authoritative but often ridiculous, heroic-looking but frequently clueless, and capable of making a single flat line reading carry an entire joke.
Warburton first became widely known as David Puddy on Seinfeld. Puddy’s stillness, bluntness, and strange confidence made him one of the show’s memorable recurring characters, and the role established Warburton’s gift for comedy built on restraint rather than frantic energy. He later carried that quality into leading and supporting television roles, including The Tick, Less than Perfect, Rules of Engagement, and A Series of Unfortunate Events, where his narration as Lemony Snicket used formal gloom and understated absurdity to frame the series.
The Tick gave Warburton one of his signature live-action parts. As the title character, he played superhero confidence at maximum volume while keeping the performance weirdly innocent. The role suited his imposing build and voice, but the comedy came from how completely the character believed in nonsense. That combination of sincerity and absurdity has remained central to many of his best performances.
Warburton’s voice work is equally important to his career. He has voiced Joe Swanson on Family Guy for decades, making the character’s booming confidence and physical bravado part of the show’s ensemble rhythm. For Disney, he voiced Kronk in The Emperor’s New Groove, one of his most beloved roles. Kronk’s cheerful sincerity, unexpected competence, and comic confusion gave Warburton a family-audience showcase that remains widely quoted. He has also voiced Brock Samson in The Venture Bros., Buzz Lightyear-related characters, and many other animated roles across television, film, and games.

In film, Warburton’s credits include The Woman Chaser, Scream 3, The Dish, Men in Black II, Ted, and many family or comedy projects. He is often cast for vocal authority or physical presence, but his best work plays against that authority. He can make an imposing character harmless, a foolish character oddly dignified, or a narrator sound both trustworthy and absurd.
Warburton’s career is a strong example of how a distinctive instrument can become a versatile one. His voice is unmistakable, yet he has used it in network sitcoms, cult animation, superhero parody, children’s comedy, and literary-style narration. Rather than disappearing into roles, he often brings a clear Patrick Warburton quality to them, and that quality has proved durable across decades of popular entertainment.
