Meryl Streep

In the 1990s and 2000s, Streep avoided becoming frozen as a prestige-drama figure. She moved through comedy, romance, political drama, adaptation and musical performance, with roles in Death Becomes Her, The Bridges of Madison County, One True Thing, Adaptation, The Hours and Angels in America. The Devil Wears Prada brought her a new generation of fans as Miranda Priestly, a performance built from restraint, stillness and devastating timing. Mamma Mia! turned her into the emotional center of a global musical hit, while Doubt and Julie & Julia again showed her ability to move between severity and warmth.

Streep won her third Academy Award for The Iron Lady, in which she portrayed Margaret Thatcher across several stages of life. Her later screen work includes Into the Woods, Florence Foster Jenkins, The Post, Little Women, Big Little Lies, Only Murders in the Building and other film and television projects. Across the decades she has accumulated more Academy Award nominations than any other performer, along with Golden Globe, BAFTA, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild recognition.

Her public honors include the AFI Life Achievement Award, Kennedy Center Honors, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, an Honorary Palme d’Or and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Streep’s legacy is not only numerical, though the awards are extraordinary. She changed expectations for what sustained screen acting could look like: intellectually exact, emotionally accessible, technically daring and capable of remaining central across changing eras of American cinema and television.
