Anne Hathaway is an American actress known for work in film, television, theater, and voice performance. Born Anne Jacqueline Hathaway on November 12, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York, she was raised in New Jersey and began performing in school and regional theater productions. As a teenager she appeared in the television series Get Real, then made her feature-film breakthrough as Mia Thermopolis in Disney's The Princess Diaries. The film's success made Hathaway a prominent young star and led to further family-oriented roles, including Ella Enchanted and the sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

Hathaway moved into more adult dramatic and comic roles in the mid-2000s. She appeared in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain and reached a broader commercial audience opposite Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, playing an assistant navigating the fashion-magazine world.
