Stanley Tucci is an American actor, producer, director, and screenwriter known for a wide range of character roles in film, television, and theater. Born Stanley Tucci Jr. on 11 November 1960 in Peekskill, New York, he grew up in Katonah, New York, in an Italian American family. His father was an art teacher and his mother was a secretary and writer. Tucci attended John Jay High School, where he became active in drama, and later studied acting at the State University of New York at Purchase, graduating in 1982.
Tucci began his professional career on stage and made his film debut in John Huston's Prizzi's Honor in 1985. During the late 1980s and early 1990s he built a screen career through supporting roles in films including Monkey Shines, Billy Bathgate, Beethoven, Prelude to a Kiss, The Pelican Brief, and It Could Happen to You. His television work during the same period included the legal drama Murder One, which brought him early Emmy recognition.
A major creative breakthrough came with Big Night, the 1996 comedy-drama Tucci co-directed, co-wrote, and starred in with Campbell Scott. The film, centered on two Italian immigrant brothers running a struggling restaurant, became one of his signature works as a filmmaker and helped establish his reputation beyond acting. He continued to direct and write while maintaining a prolific acting career, appearing in Deconstructing Harry, A Midsummer Night's Dream, America's Sweethearts, Road to Perdition, Maid in Manhattan, and The Terminal.

Tucci gained further prominence with roles that balanced wit, menace, and sophistication. In The Devil Wears Prada, he played fashion editor Nigel Kipling, a performance that became one of his best-known supporting turns. He later appeared in Julie & Julia, Burlesque, Easy A, Captain America: The First Avenger, Margin Call, and the Hunger Games film series as flamboyant television host Caesar Flickerman. His portrayal of George Harvey in The Lovely Bones earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
On television, Tucci won acclaim for playing journalist Walter Winchell in the HBO film Winchell, receiving the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie. He also portrayed Stanley Kubrick in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and appeared in series and limited series such as 3 lbs, Feud: Bette & Joan, and Limetown. In animation, he voiced Bitsy Brandenham in Apple TV+'s Central Park.
Tucci's later screen work has included Spotlight, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Beauty and the Beast, Supernova, Worth, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, Citadel, and Conclave. He also became known as a food and travel presenter through the CNN documentary series Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, for which he won Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series.
