Lucy Liu

Lucy Liu is an American actress, director, producer, and visual artist whose career has made her one of the most visible Asian American performers in mainstream film and television. Born in New York City in 1968 to Chinese immigrant parents, she studied at the University of Michigan and began acting professionally in the early 1990s. Her screen persona often combines precision, wit, cool authority, and physical confidence, but her career has ranged far beyond the action roles that first made her internationally famous.

Liu’s breakthrough came on Ally McBeal, where she played Ling Woo, a sharp, confrontational lawyer whose presence quickly became one of the show’s signatures. The role brought Emmy recognition and made Liu a rare Asian American actress with a major recurring part on a network hit at the end of the 1990s.
