Jean Reno

Jean Reno is a Moroccan-born French and Spanish actor whose screen image combines physical authority, restraint, and dry humor. Born Juan Moreno y Herrera-Jiménez in Casablanca on July 30, 1948, he was the son of Spanish parents from Andalusia who had settled in French Morocco. After moving to France, he trained as an actor, served in the French military, and adopted the professional name Jean Reno. His height, deep voice, and quiet intensity helped him become one of French cinema’s most internationally recognizable performers.

Reno’s rise is closely linked with director Luc Besson. He appeared in Besson’s early work Le Dernier Combat and Subway, but their collaboration became defining with The Big Blue, La Femme Nikita, and Léon: The Professional. In The Big Blue he played Enzo Molinari, a role that brought him major attention and a César Award nomination. In La Femme Nikita he played Victor, the Cleaner, a concise but memorable figure whose lethal calm foreshadowed his later international persona. Léon gave him his signature role: a lonely professional hitman who becomes guardian and mentor to a young girl played by Natalie Portman. The film turned Reno into a global cult star and remains the part most closely associated with his name.

Reno also became a leading figure in French popular cinema. Les Visiteurs, a time-travel comedy in which he played the medieval knight Godefroy de Montmirail, was a major success in France and earned him another César nomination. The contrast between Léon’s melancholy violence and Les Visiteurs’ broad comedy showed the range behind Reno’s imposing exterior. He continued to work in French-language films including The Crimson Rivers, Wasabi, Ruby & Quentin, 22 Bullets, The Round Up, and later The Visitors: Bastille Day.
