Matthew McConaughey

That reinvention began around The Lincoln Lawyer and continued through Bernie, Killer Joe, Magic Mike, Mud, and The Paperboy. These films emphasized danger, eccentricity, vulnerability, and regional specificity rather than easy charm. The turning point was Dallas Buyers Club, in which he played Ron Woodroof, a Texas man diagnosed with AIDS who becomes involved in the distribution of unapproved treatments during the 1980s crisis. The role won McConaughey the Academy Award for Best Actor and a Golden Globe, and it recast him as one of the most respected actors of the moment.

He followed the Oscar win with two major cultural events in 2014. On television, he starred as Rust Cohle opposite Woody Harrelson in the first season of HBO's True Detective, earning an Emmy nomination and helping make the season a major critical phenomenon. In film, he starred in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, bringing emotional directness to a large-scale science-fiction story about time, family, and survival. He later worked in projects including Free State of Jones, Gold, The Dark Tower, White Boy Rick, Serenity, The Beach Bum, The Gentlemen, and voice roles in Kubo and the Two Strings, Sing, and Sing 2.

Beyond acting, McConaughey has written a memoir, Greenlights, taught at the University of Texas, and remained visible in philanthropy and public life. Those activities sometimes attract attention separate from his screen work, but his professional biography is anchored by a rare career curve: a supporting-role breakout, a romantic-lead peak, a self-directed dramatic reset, an Oscar-winning performance, and a continuing ability to move between mainstream entertainment and more idiosyncratic projects.
