John Lithgow

Television brought Lithgow some of his largest audiences. He starred as the alien High Commander Dick Solomon in 3rd Rock from the Sun, winning multiple Emmy Awards for a role that required both sitcom timing and a kind of grand theatrical absurdity. He later won major acclaim as the Trinity Killer in Dexter, a performance that turned his genial public image into something frightening. He also played Winston Churchill in The Crown, earning another Emmy and introducing him to a new generation of prestige-television viewers.

Lithgow's later screen work has emphasized how durable his range is. In The Old Man he played Harold Harper, a senior intelligence figure with a complicated personal and professional past. In Conclave he appeared as Cardinal Tremblay, adding ecclesiastical intrigue to a career already rich with authority figures, eccentrics and villains. He has also continued to work as a writer and performer for children, producing books and albums that reflect his interest in language, rhythm and performance beyond acting alone.

What distinguishes Lithgow is not simply longevity but adaptability. He can play intellectual seriousness, childish vanity, paternal warmth, institutional authority or unnerving violence without seeming like a different performer each time. His career is a model of American character acting expanded to leading roles, award-winning television and mainstream family entertainment.
