David Leitch

David Leitch is an American filmmaker, producer, actor, and former stunt performer whose career helped reshape contemporary action cinema. Born in Wisconsin and educated at the University of Minnesota, Leitch entered the industry through stunt work, fight coordination, and second-unit action. Before becoming a director, he built a long résumé as a stunt performer and coordinator on studio films, including action-heavy projects such as The Matrix sequels, Fight Club-era and spy-thriller work, and The Bourne Ultimatum. His stunt background gave him a practical understanding of movement, camera placement, impact, and performer safety that later became central to his directing style.

Leitch is closely associated with the rise of 87eleven, the action design and production company connected to a generation of stunt professionals who moved into directing. With Chad Stahelski, he helped develop the action language of John Wick. Although Stahelski received sole directing credit on the released film, Leitch’s role in shaping the project has been widely discussed, and the film’s success helped open studio directing opportunities for stunt-trained filmmakers. John Wick’s clean choreography, tactical movement, and emphasis on readable physical action became influential across the genre.

Leitch’s credited solo directing career began with Atomic Blonde, a Cold War spy thriller built around Charlize Theron’s physical performance and long-take fight design. He followed it with Deadpool 2, bringing his action background into superhero comedy while maintaining the series’ irreverent tone. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw expanded his scale into franchise spectacle, and Bullet Train combined ensemble comedy, stylized violence, and confined-location momentum. The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, was especially personal to Leitch’s career because it foregrounded stunt performers and the hidden labor behind action filmmaking.
