Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler is a Scottish actor and producer best known for combining leading-man drama with large-scale action roles. Born Gerard James Butler in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, on November 13, 1969, he studied law at the University of Glasgow before turning toward performance. His path into acting was unusually indirect: after university and legal training, he left the legal profession behind and pursued stage and screen work in the 1990s. That background has often been part of his public story because it underlines how sharply his career changed direction before he became an international film star.

Butler's early screen roles included appearances in Mrs Brown, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Tale of the Mummy, followed by larger parts in Dracula 2000, Attila, Reign of Fire, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, and Timeline. His musical-theater breakthrough on film came when he played the Phantom in Joel Schumacher's 2004 adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. The role put him in a high-visibility romantic and dramatic part that was very different from the action image that would later dominate much of his career.

His defining global breakthrough arrived with Zack Snyder's 300, in which he played King Leonidas of Sparta. The film's stylized violence, visual design, and quotable performance turned Butler into a recognizable action lead. After 300, he alternated between romantic comedies, thrillers, dramas, voice work, and action pictures. He appeared in P.S. I Love You, Nim's Island, RocknRolla, The Ugly Truth, Law Abiding Citizen, Coriolanus, Machine Gun Preacher, Chasing Mavericks, and Playing for Keeps. He also voiced Stoick the Vast in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, bringing warmth and stern authority to one of DreamWorks Animation's major series.
