Scarlett Johansson is an American actress, singer, producer, and director whose film and stage career began in childhood and developed into one of the most commercially successful screen careers of her generation. She was born Scarlett Ingrid Johansson on November 22, 1984, in New York City. Raised in a family with Danish and New York roots, she trained and auditioned as a child and studied at institutions for young performers before moving steadily from stage work into film.
Johansson made her film debut in North in 1994 and gained early attention with roles in Manny & Lo, The Horse Whisperer, and Ghost World. These early parts established her as a child and teenage performer with a naturalistic screen presence. Her transition to adult roles came in 2003 with Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring. Lost in Translation, directed by Sofia Coppola, brought Johansson major international recognition and a BAFTA Award for Best Actress, while Girl with a Pearl Earring further positioned her as a leading dramatic actor.
During the mid-2000s, Johansson balanced independent and studio projects. She appeared in A Love Song for Bobby Long, Match Point, Scoop, The Black Dahlia, The Prestige, The Nanny Diaries, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She also pursued music, releasing the album Anywhere I Lay My Head and later collaborating with Pete Yorn on Break Up. In 2010 she made her Broadway debut in a revival of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge, winning the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

Johansson's global profile expanded when she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, beginning with Iron Man 2. She reprised the role in The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and the standalone film Black Widow. The role made her closely associated with large-scale franchise filmmaking while she continued to take parts in science fiction, drama, comedy, and voice acting.
Outside Marvel, Johansson starred in or voiced major roles in Her, Under the Skin, Lucy, The Jungle Book, Sing, Ghost in the Shell, Isle of Dogs, Jojo Rabbit, Marriage Story, Sing 2, Asteroid City, Fly Me to the Moon, and Jurassic World Rebirth. Her performance as an actress navigating divorce in Marriage Story and as a mother in Nazi Germany in Jojo Rabbit earned her simultaneous Academy Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for films released in 2019.
Johansson has been recognized for both commercial impact and critical success. Her films have grossed billions worldwide, and her awards history includes a BAFTA Award, a Tony Award, and multiple Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. Her career is marked by movement between child acting, adult dramatic roles, Broadway, music, voice performance, superhero films, and independent projects, making her one of the most visible and versatile American screen performers of the early twenty-first century.
