Don Cheadle is an American actor, producer, writer, director and activist whose career has moved between socially engaged drama, studio franchises, independent film and television comedy. Born Donald Frank Cheadle Jr. on 29 November 1964 in Kansas City, Missouri, he grew up in a family that moved often because of his father's work as a clinical psychologist. He studied at the California Institute of the Arts, where formal theatre training helped shape the precise, contained acting style that later made him effective in both leading and supporting roles. His early screen work included television and small film parts, but he gradually became known as a performer who could give depth to characters with relatively little screen time.
Cheadle's breakthrough period came in the 1990s. He attracted strong critical attention as Mouse Alexander in Carl Franklin's Devil in a Blue Dress, a performance that announced his gift for combining charisma, danger and emotional intelligence. He followed with roles in films such as Boogie Nights, Bulworth, Out of Sight and The Family Man, and he became a regular collaborator in ensemble films where his quiet authority could anchor a scene. Steven Soderbergh's Out of Sight and later the Ocean's films placed him inside cool, rhythmically edited crime-comedy ensembles, while Traffic used him in a more sober story about drugs, politics and law enforcement.
His most acclaimed dramatic role came with Hotel Rwanda, in which he portrayed hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The film brought Cheadle an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, along with major awards recognition from the Golden Globes, BAFTA and the Screen Actors Guild. The role also intensified the public association between Cheadle's acting and humanitarian work. He became an outspoken advocate on Darfur and other human-rights issues, co-authoring Not on Our Watch with John Prendergast and helping launch the Not On Our Watch Project with other public figures.

Cheadle has also built a major television career. He won a Golden Globe for House of Lies, in which he played management consultant Marty Kaan, and he received multiple Emmy nominations across acting, producing and short-form work. His television credits include The Golden Palace, Picket Fences, ER, The Bernie Mac Show, House of Lies, Black Monday and Marvel-related series work. In these roles he has often used a dry, fast, ironic mode that contrasts with the intense moral seriousness of films such as Hotel Rwanda.
In popular global cinema, Cheadle is widely known as James Rhodes, also called War Machine, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He took over the role in Iron Man 2 and continued through Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and later Marvel television appearances. The part made him familiar to audiences far beyond independent-film and awards circles, while still drawing on his ability to make a loyal military officer feel thoughtful and human inside large-scale effects storytelling.
Cheadle has repeatedly used production and directing work to pursue personal projects. He co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in Miles Ahead, an unconventional film portrait of jazz musician Miles Davis. Rather than making a standard cradle-to-grave biopic, the film emphasized mood, improvisation and Davis's creative volatility, reflecting Cheadle's interest in music and form as well as performance. Later film work included Crash, Talk to Me, Reign Over Me, Flight, No Sudden Move and White Noise, showing a career that remains unusually varied.
Across more than three decades, Cheadle's significance lies in his range and seriousness of purpose. He can be a franchise regular, comic antihero, historical witness, noir sidekick, jazz legend or political advocate without seeming to belong exclusively to any one lane. His best performances are marked by intelligence under pressure: characters who watch carefully, speak economically and reveal moral tension in small shifts of expression. That combination has made him one of the most respected American actors of his generation.
