Jason Statham (born 26 July 1967) is an English actor and producer known primarily for action thrillers, crime films, and ensemble franchise work. His screen persona is closely associated with physically demanding roles, laconic antiheroes, professional criminals, drivers, soldiers, and assassins. After emerging in British crime cinema at the end of the 1990s, he became one of the most recognizable international action stars of the 2000s and 2010s, with major roles in the Transporter, Expendables, Fast & Furious, Meg, and Mechanic film series.
Statham was born in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, England, and grew up in Great Yarmouth. Before becoming an actor, he was active in sport and modelling. He played football in his youth and trained as a diver, eventually becoming a member of Britain's national diving squad. He represented England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, competing in the one-metre, three-metre, and ten-metre platform events. His athletic background, together with training in martial arts and kickboxing, later became central to the way he was marketed and cast in action films. During the 1990s he also worked as a model, including for fashion brands, and appeared in music videos before moving into feature films.
His film career began after director Guy Ritchie cast him in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, released in 1998. The film's success introduced Statham as part of a new wave of British crime cinema, and Ritchie cast him again in Snatch in 2000. Those early roles drew on Statham's tough, streetwise image and helped establish the understated comic timing and physical presence that would remain part of his screen identity. He moved into Hollywood productions soon afterward, appearing in films such as Turn It Up, Ghosts of Mars, and The One.

Statham's breakthrough as a leading action actor came with The Transporter in 2002, in which he played Frank Martin, a highly skilled professional driver and courier. Written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, the film emphasized stunt work, martial-arts-style fight choreography, and car-chase sequences. Statham returned for Transporter 2 in 2005 and Transporter 3 in 2008, and the role became one of the defining parts of his career. During the same period he appeared in The Italian Job, Cellular, Revolver, London, and Crank, balancing supporting parts, crime dramas, and high-concept action vehicles.
In the late 2000s and early 2010s, Statham continued to work steadily in action cinema. He starred in The Bank Job, Death Race, Crank: High Voltage, The Mechanic, Killer Elite, Safe, Parker, Homefront, and Mechanic: Resurrection. These films reinforced his reputation for grounded fight scenes, stunt-oriented performance, and characters who rely on discipline, combat skill, and dry wit rather than elaborate dialogue. He also joined Sylvester Stallone's ensemble action series The Expendables, playing Lee Christmas in films released between 2010 and 2023.
Statham reached an even wider global audience through the Fast & Furious franchise. After a cameo in Fast & Furious 6, he appeared as Deckard Shaw in Furious 7 and later returned in The Fate of the Furious, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and Fast X. Hobbs & Shaw, which paired him with Dwayne Johnson, expanded Shaw from antagonist to co-lead and also gave Statham a producer credit. Outside that franchise, he starred in the science-fiction action film The Meg and its sequel Meg 2: The Trench, both built around large-scale creature-feature spectacle.
His later work has included renewed collaborations with Guy Ritchie, including Wrath of Man and Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, as well as the vigilante action film The Beekeeper. Statham has also done voice and narration work, including Gnomeo & Juliet and documentary projects. Although he has generally remained within action and crime genres, his career has been notable for longevity, international box-office appeal, and a consistent screen identity built around athleticism, terse humour, and practical action performance.
