Bill Nighy

William Francis Nighy is a British actor known for a long stage career and for film and television roles that combine dry wit, melancholy, elegance, and eccentric timing. He was born in Caterham, Surrey, on December 12, 1949. After leaving school young and working a series of jobs, he trained at the Guildford School of Acting and built his early career in regional theatre. His formative stage work included the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool and the National Theatre in London, where he appeared in ambitious productions and became associated with writers and directors such as David Hare.

Nighy's reputation first developed strongly in theatre. He appeared in David Hare's Pravda, Harold Pinter's Betrayal, Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, and Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, and later received major recognition for Blue/Orange. He also worked on Broadway, including in Hare's The Vertical Hour and Skylight; Skylight brought him a Tony Award nomination.
