Anthony Mackie

Mackie also portrayed major real-life cultural and political figures. He played Tupac Shakur in Notorious and Martin Luther King Jr. in the HBO film All the Way. These roles required him to work within the audience's knowledge of public figures while avoiding simple imitation. His career during this period also included action, crime and science-fiction projects, such as Night Catches Us, The Adjustment Bureau, Real Steel and Pain & Gain, showing a willingness to move between genres rather than settle into a single lane.

His most widely recognized role is Sam Wilson, also known as Falcon and later Captain America, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Mackie first played Wilson in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, then returned in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier placed Sam Wilson's acceptance of the Captain America mantle at the center of the story, and Captain America: Brave New World made Mackie the lead of a major Marvel feature. The role turned him into an international franchise star while drawing on his ability to project skepticism, humor and moral seriousness.

Mackie's television work expanded further with Altered Carbon, Twisted Metal and The Studio. In Twisted Metal, he played John Doe in a violent comic action setting based on the video-game franchise, while The Studio used a fictionalized version of himself in a satire of Hollywood. He has also worked as a producer, extending his influence beyond acting alone.

What distinguishes Mackie's career is the combination of accessibility and discipline. He can be relaxed and funny in interviews and comic roles, but his strongest performances often carry a watchful quality rooted in stage training. He has played soldiers, artists, criminals, superheroes and historical figures without losing a grounded sense of character. By the mid-2020s, Mackie had become one of the few actors whose résumé convincingly joined Juilliard theatre, Oscar-winning drama, cable and streaming television, video-game adaptation and top-line superhero filmmaking.
