Gary Oldman

Gary Oldman is an English actor and filmmaker widely noted for the range and intensity of his screen performances. Born Gary Leonard Oldman in London on 21 March 1958, he trained as an actor before building a reputation in British theatre and film. His early stage work included roles with major London companies, and his first screen appearances led quickly to a series of acclaimed, volatile character parts that made him one of the defining British actors of his generation.

Oldman's breakthrough came in the mid-1980s with Sid and Nancy, in which he played Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, and Prick Up Your Ears, in which he portrayed playwright Joe Orton. These performances showed a willingness to transform physically and vocally, and they helped place him among the group of young British actors sometimes described as the Brit Pack. He followed with roles in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, State of Grace and JFK, the latter casting him as Lee Harvey Oswald.

In the 1990s Oldman moved fully into international cinema. He played Count Dracula in Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula, the corrupt DEA agent Norman Stansfield in Luc Besson's Léon: The Professional, Beethoven in Immortal Beloved, and memorable antagonists in True Romance, The Fifth Element and Air Force One. The parts varied widely in tone, but they strengthened his reputation for precise, theatrical character construction and for playing both flamboyant villains and inward, damaged figures.

Oldman also wrote and directed Nil by Mouth, a 1997 drama inspired by working-class South London life. The film won significant British recognition, including BAFTA awards, and remains an important part of his career because it showed his authorship outside acting. As a performer, he later became familiar to global franchise audiences as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter films and as James Gordon in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, beginning with Batman Begins and continuing through The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.
