Biography

Cillian Murphy is an Irish actor and producer whose work spans theatre, independent film, major studio cinema and prestige television. Born on 25 May 1976 in Douglas, Cork, and raised in Ballintemple, he came from a family with strong educational roots: his mother taught French, his father worked for Ireland's Department of Education, and other relatives were teachers. Before acting became his career, Murphy was drawn to music. He sang and played guitar in bands with his brother, and the possibility of a recording contract arrived around the same turning point as his first professional acting opportunity.

Murphy attended Presentation Brothers College in Cork and briefly studied law at University College Cork, but theatre soon displaced both law and music. His professional breakthrough came in 1996 with Enda Walsh's Disco Pigs, staged by Corcadorca Theatre Company. Murphy played Pig, a volatile Cork teenager, and the production toured internationally. He later reprised the role in the 2001 film adaptation. That origin is important to his screen career: even in film, Murphy often carries a theatrical precision, controlling stillness, voice and physical energy in ways that suggest his stage training.

His early film work made him visible to international audiences. In Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later, Murphy played Jim, a bicycle courier who wakes from a coma into a devastated Britain; the film became one of the defining horror films of the early 2000s. He followed it with Intermission, Red Eye, Breakfast on Pluto, The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Sunshine. Breakfast on Pluto, in which he played the transgender Irish character Kitten Braden, brought him a Golden Globe nomination, while Ken Loach's The Wind That Shakes the Barley won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and connected Murphy to Irish historical drama.
