Michael Uslan is an American film producer, lawyer, comics scholar and educator best known for his long association with screen adaptations of Batman and related DC Comics properties. Raised in New Jersey as a devoted comic-book reader and collector, he developed an early interest in treating superhero stories as modern folklore rather than disposable entertainment. While at Indiana University, he helped turn that interest into academic work by teaching what has been described as the first accredited university course devoted to the serious study of comic books.
Uslan studied law with a particular interest in copyright and trademark issues, an education that later shaped his approach to entertainment rights. Before becoming a major film producer, he wrote for comics and worked with DC Comics, including stories connected to characters such as Batman and The Shadow. His combination of legal training, comic-book scholarship and industry ambition positioned him to pursue a more serious screen version of Batman at a time when the character was still widely associated with the camp tone of the 1960s television series.
In 1979 Uslan and producer Benjamin Melniker acquired the film rights to Batman. Their effort helped lead to Tim Burton's Batman in 1989, a major commercial success that re-established the character as a darker cinematic figure. Uslan and Melniker were subsequently credited as executive producers across a long line of Batman-related films, including live-action features, animated films and later DC projects. Uslan's producing credits extend across titles such as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight Rises, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, Joker and numerous animated Batman and Justice League films.

Beyond Batman, Uslan's credits include work connected to Swamp Thing, The Spirit, Constantine, The Lego Movie and other film and television projects. He has also continued to lecture and teach, including work as a Professor of Practice at Indiana University, where he has drawn on his Hollywood experience for courses about film and television production. His memoir The Boy Who Loved Batman recounts his path from comic-book fan to producer and was later developed for the stage. Uslan's career is often cited as an example of fan expertise becoming professional authorship and rights stewardship within mainstream popular cinema.
