Edward Norton

Norton continued to choose roles in which charm and instability overlap. He starred in Keeping the Faith, which he also directed, and appeared in The Score, 25th Hour, Red Dragon, The Italian Job, Kingdom of Heaven, The Illusionist, The Painted Veil, and The Incredible Hulk. In Spike Lee's 25th Hour, his performance as a convicted drug dealer spending his last day before prison is one of his most emotionally direct. In The Illusionist and The Painted Veil, he leaned into period drama and restraint, while The Incredible Hulk placed him inside the machinery of a superhero franchise.

A major later phase came through ensemble work with distinctive directors. Norton became part of Wes Anderson's repertory, appearing in Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle of Dogs, and Asteroid City. He earned another Oscar nomination for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), playing Mike Shiner, a brilliant and vain stage actor whose theatrical authenticity is inseparable from ego. In Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery he played tech billionaire Miles Bron, using smooth confidence and foolishness as comic weapons. In A Complete Unknown he portrayed folk musician Pete Seeger, adding another awards-recognized supporting role to his filmography.

Norton has also maintained interests beyond acting. He co-founded Class 5 Films, has produced documentaries and features, and directed Motherless Brooklyn, a long-gestating adaptation in which he also starred. He is known for environmental and civic work, including involvement with conservation and sustainable development organizations. Those activities parallel a screen career often drawn to institutions, power, deception, and conscience.

What distinguishes Norton is his precision. His characters often think quickly, speak carefully, and hide something from others or from themselves. Whether playing a frightened defendant, a radicalized young man, an alienated office worker, a romantic priest, a theatrical narcissist, or a rich fool, Norton tends to make intelligence dramatic: a force that can illuminate, manipulate, defend, or destroy.
