Stephen Lang is an American actor, playwright, narrator, producer, and screenwriter known for bringing physical intensity and theatrical discipline to both stage and screen. Born in New York City in 1952 and educated at Swarthmore College, Lang built his career from the theater outward. His screen image is often associated with soldiers, commanders, lawmen, and hard-edged survivors, but his work is broader than that shorthand suggests: he has played historical figures, villains, fathers, veterans, and men whose authority masks fear, grief, or obsession.
Lang developed a major stage career before and alongside his film work. On Broadway he earned a Tony Award nomination for The Speed of Darkness, and he later received acclaim for Beyond Glory, a solo performance in which he portrayed multiple recipients of the Medal of Honor. That project, adapted from Larry Smith's book, reflected Lang's long interest in military history and in the emotional cost of service. He also served as a co-artistic director of the Actors Studio in the mid-2000s, a role that underlined his standing within American acting circles beyond his screen celebrity.
Film audiences came to know Lang through a run of forceful supporting and leading roles. He appeared in Manhunter, Last Exit to Brooklyn, Gettysburg, Tombstone, Gods and Generals, Public Enemies, The Men Who Stare at Goats, Conan the Barbarian, and many genre films and thrillers. His career reached its widest commercial audience when James Cameron cast him as Colonel Miles Quaritch in Avatar. Lang's performance gave the film a blunt human antagonist whose militarized confidence contrasted with the world of Pandora; he later returned to the franchise in Avatar: The Way of Water and subsequent entries.

Lang has also had a strong late-career presence in horror and suspense. In Don't Breathe he played Norman Nordstrom, a blind veteran whose vulnerability, menace, and capacity for violence made the film's home-invasion premise more disturbing. He reprised the role in Don't Breathe 2. On television, he has appeared in Terra Nova, Into the Badlands, The Good Fight, and other series, often using his voice, posture, and controlled stillness to project command even in morally uncertain characters.
The through-line of Lang's career is intensity shaped by craft. He is not simply a performer of toughness; his best roles make toughness unstable, tragic, frightening, or theatrical. Whether playing Confederate generals, futuristic mercenaries, a reclusive veteran, or a stage figure speaking directly to an audience, Lang brings a sense of pressure to his characters. That pressure has made him a durable presence in American drama, action, science fiction, and horror for more than four decades.
