Keith David

Keith David is an American actor and voice performer distinguished by his resonant bass voice, commanding screen presence, and extraordinary range across film, television, stage, animation, documentaries, and video games. Born Keith David Williams in New York City in 1956, he grew up in Queens and trained seriously for the stage. After attending the High School of Performing Arts, he studied drama at the Juilliard School, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. That classical foundation has remained visible throughout a career that includes Shakespeare, horror, war films, comedy, narration, and musical performance.

David’s screen career began with one of his most enduring roles: Childs in John Carpenter’s The Thing. The 1982 film was not initially treated as a classic, but it later became one of the most respected science-fiction horror films of its era, and David’s wary, grounded performance helped anchor its ensemble. He followed with Oliver Stone’s Platoon, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and with They Live, another Carpenter film that became a cult favorite. By the late 1980s and 1990s, David had become a familiar and reliable presence in genre films and dramas.
