Ian McKellen

Sir Ian McKellen is an English actor whose career links classical theatre, modern drama, blockbuster film, television, and public advocacy. Born Ian Murray McKellen in Burnley, Lancashire, on 25 May 1939, he studied at the University of Cambridge and began professional stage work in the early 1960s. He became closely associated with Shakespeare and with major British theatre institutions before gaining worldwide screen recognition later in life.

McKellen's stage career developed through repertory theatre, the West End, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the National Theatre. He became known for Shakespearean roles including Richard II, Macbeth, Iago, King Lear, and Richard III, as well as for modern and contemporary drama. His performance as Antonio Salieri in Amadeus won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play, and his British theatre work earned multiple Laurence Olivier Awards.

Although theatre formed the core of his reputation, McKellen also built a substantial screen career. His film Richard III adapted Shakespeare through a fascist 1930s visual world and brought his classical authority to cinema. Gods and Monsters earned him an Academy Award nomination for playing filmmaker James Whale. He then reached a much wider popular audience as Magneto in the X-Men films and Gandalf in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Those roles made him one of the rare actors equally identified with high classical theatre and global fantasy franchises.

McKellen has also appeared in television and smaller-scale film projects, including work that foregrounds wit, age, memory, and theatrical friendship. His collaborations with other major British actors, including Patrick Stewart, have become a recurring part of his later public profile.
