Andy Serkis

Andy Serkis, born Andrew Clement Serkis in Ruislip Manor, Middlesex, England, on April 20, 1964, is an English actor, director, producer, and performance-capture pioneer. He studied visual arts and theatre at Lancaster University and began his professional career in stage work before moving into British television and film. His early background in theatre, physical characterization, and voice helped prepare him for the work that would define much of his career: creating fully realized characters through a combination of acting, movement, facial performance, and digital technology.

Serkis became internationally famous as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The role was a landmark in performance capture because Serkis did not merely provide a voice; his body, facial expressions, timing, and emotional choices formed the basis for the digital character. He later returned to the role for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. His work as Gollum helped change industry and audience understanding of digital acting, even though awards bodies were slow to recognize performance-capture work in the same way as traditional screen acting.

He continued to expand the form in King Kong, where he performed the title ape, and in the Planet of the Apes reboot series, where his Caesar became one of the most acclaimed digital characters in modern film. Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and War for the Planet of the Apes gave Serkis a multi-film arc built on leadership, grief, anger, and restraint. He also played Captain Haddock in The Adventures of Tintin and Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Alongside that work, Serkis has maintained conventional live-action roles, including Ulysses Klaue in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther, Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman, and Kino Loy in Andor.
