Peter Jackson

The Lord of the Rings changed Jackson's career and New Zealand's screen industry. It made Wellington a global production hub and elevated Weta's practical and digital effects work. Jackson later directed King Kong, a large-scale remake rooted in his childhood love for the original film, and returned to Middle-earth with The Hobbit trilogy. The Hobbit films were commercially successful and technologically ambitious, though more divisive critically than The Lord of the Rings because of their expanded adaptation and high-frame-rate presentation.

Jackson's later work has shown a strong documentary interest. They Shall Not Grow Old used restored and colorized First World War footage to create an unusually immediate portrait of soldiers' experiences. The Beatles: Get Back reworked extensive footage from the Let It Be sessions into a long documentary series that emphasized collaboration, boredom, humor, and musical process rather than only band conflict. He also helped produce Mortal Engines and has remained associated with restoration, archival technology, and New Zealand film infrastructure.

Jackson has received major New Zealand honors, including knighthood, and is widely regarded as one of the most commercially successful directors in film history. Yet his career is unusual because its two halves remain connected: the teenager making effects shots at home and the Oscar-winning director managing massive digital armies are recognizably the same kind of filmmaker. His signature is immersion, whether in gore comedy, psychological fantasy, Tolkien's mythology, World War I archives, or Beatles studio footage. He builds worlds by obsessing over details until the unreal or the distant begins to feel tangible.
