Chris Columbus

Mrs. Doubtfire gave Columbus another defining success. Built around Robin Williams's performance as a divorced father disguising himself as a housekeeper to spend time with his children, the film balanced broad comedy with a softened treatment of divorce and family separation. Columbus followed with Nine Months, Stepmom, and Bicentennial Man, films that continued his interest in family bonds, grief, parenthood, and sentimental transformation even when critical response varied.

In the early 2000s Columbus directed the first two Harry Potter films: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. His role was foundational. He established the screen world of Hogwarts, cast and guided the young central actors, and translated J. K. Rowling's early novels into a visual language that later directors could modify. The first film's production design, tone, and casting became the base of one of the most successful film franchises in history. Columbus later stayed connected as a producer on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

His producing career is broad. Through 1492 Pictures and related ventures, he has produced or executive produced Night at the Museum films, The Help, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Christmas Chronicles, Nosferatu, and other projects. That range is wider than his directing reputation alone suggests: he has backed family adventures, literary adaptations, horror, independent drama, and director-driven genre work.

Columbus's career is sometimes described as sentimental, but that word undersells his practical influence. He has repeatedly helped build films around young performers, families under pressure, and fantasy premises that needed to feel inviting rather than alienating. From Gremlins and The Goonies to Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Harry Potter, his work occupies a large place in modern popular memory.
