Robert Douglas Thomas Pattinson is an English actor and producer whose career has moved unusually fluidly between global franchise cinema, independent auteur projects, and large-scale studio films. Born in London on 13 May 1986, he began acting as a teenager in local theatre before moving into screen work. One of his first widely noticed parts was Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, a supporting role that introduced him to a broad international audience while he was still very early in his career.
Pattinson became a worldwide star when he was cast as Edward Cullen in the Twilight film series, beginning with Twilight in 2008. The five-film saga made him one of the most recognizable young actors of the period and gave him unusual box-office visibility, but it also created a narrow public image that he spent much of the next decade deliberately complicating. Rather than remain only in romantic fantasy leads, he sought out directors and projects that emphasized risk, discomfort, and character work.
His post-Twilight filmography includes David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis, James Gray's The Lost City of Z, the Safdie brothers' Good Time, Claire Denis's High Life, and Robert Eggers's The Lighthouse. Good Time was especially important in reshaping critical discussion of his career, with Pattinson playing Connie Nikas as a desperate, manipulative New York hustler across one frantic night. The Lighthouse, opposite Willem Dafoe, pushed him further into stylized psychological drama and confirmed his interest in physically and emotionally extreme roles.

In the 2020s Pattinson returned to major studio filmmaking without giving up the idiosyncratic choices that had defined his independent run. He appeared in Christopher Nolan's Tenet and took on Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves's The Batman, playing the character as a younger, more haunted detective figure. He later starred in Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17, continuing his pattern of working with distinctive filmmakers even in commercially prominent projects. His screen persona has therefore become less defined by one franchise than by a willingness to oscillate between stardom and experimentation.
Outside acting, Pattinson has contributed music to film soundtracks, worked as a model and fashion ambassador, and supported charitable causes including the GO Campaign. His career is notable for how carefully he redirected early celebrity into a long-term body of work built around director-led cinema, genre shifts, and performances that often resist conventional leading-man polish.
